The Bulgarian National Television (BNT) is building a team of fact-checkers as part of its efforts to counter disinformation under the BROD project. The fact-checkers adopt best practices in the field, also relying on the experience of AFP. As a public media outlet, BNT’s main mission is to educate and provide accurate and verified information. That is why we recognize the fight against disinformation as part of our mission. One of the main tools for disinformation is fake news. Therefore, the BNT fact-checking team aims to weed out and point them out. Our mission is focused on those claims in the public space that arouse controversy and doubts. We encounter them most often on social networks, but sometimes also in the speech of politicians and public figures. When we check claims, we always look for their original source and the context in which they were created. Before deciding whether to verify a claim, we use tools to measure its popularity and assess the audience it is intended for, as well as the degree of impact it has. We only verify claims for which we can gather sufficient evidence and which we have assessed as popular enough to have an impact on society. We verify claims from any source without being influenced by them in our selection. However, we may verify multiple claims from the same source if they have gained sufficient popularity in the public sphere. Since we work with facts, we do not verify personal opinions or predictions about the future.
