Brussels: TikTok Falls on Protecting Minors' Accounts

The European Commission has sent TikTok preliminary findings stating that the platform's account settings for children and teenagers do not meet the safety standards required under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

According to the Commission, TikTok allows minors to set their accounts to "public," making their content accessible to a broad audience, including people without a TikTok account. In addition, content posted by older teenagers aged 16 and 17 can be recommended to other users through the For You feed, increasing the risk of unwanted contact, cyberbullying, and other forms of abuse.

The Commission believes that default account settings should provide the highest level of privacy and safety. It therefore recommends that minors' content should, by default, only be visible to users they have approved, and that their posts should neither be recommended to other TikTok users nor made accessible to audiences outside the platform.
