Bulgarian media:  TikTok has deleted over 423,000 fake profiles linked to Bulgaria

The popular social network TikTok has deleted over 423,000 fake profiles linked to Bulgaria between July and December 2024, according to a new six-month report submitted to the European Commission, Bulgarian media reports

The document was prepared in connection with the company’s obligations under the European Code of Practice against Disinformation. TikTok’s latest report provides a clear view of the scale of political manipulation and disinformation within the European Union. Bulgaria is listed as one of the countries with high activity of fake profiles and content violating the platform’s rules.

TikTok administrators have removed 328 ads in Bulgaria that violated its political content policy. The largest number of ads were removed in Romania (10,698) and Germany (6,498). TikTok’s report was submitted to the European Commission under the company’s obligations under the European Code of Practice on Countering Disinformation. Sharing political views and engaging in political conversations is allowed as content on TikTok, but the policy prohibits accounts of politicians and political parties from posting political ads or content with a political purpose. Governments, politicians, and political party accounts are also not allowed to access campaign monetization and fundraising features. 

6.4 million fake political content likes on TikTok were removed in Bulgaria, with the highest number in Germany - 131,158,324. 

Data for Romania clearly shows that political disinformation on TikTok was linked to independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. The number of fake accounts removed in Bulgaria is 423,060. The Netherlands is in first place - 886,619, followed by Spain - 709,560. The videos removed in Bulgaria due to violation of the rules for edited media content and content generated by artificial intelligence are 227. The highest number is in Germany - 11,199.
