Get the full story. Watch out for fake experts. Resist emotional traps. There is no quick fix for climate change. Watch out for AI-made fakes.

This are the five tips on how to spot climate disinformation, given by the The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action as part of the newly launched campaign #ClimateFactsMatter, developed in collaboration with EDMO and EU Disinfo Lab experts. Part and main resource of the campaign is the newly published digital handbook co-created with experts from EDMO and EDMO Hubs available here It summarises some of the key points to remember in order to spot climate disinformation.

The 2025 special Eurobarometer on climate change found that 49% of EU citizens are struggling to differentiate between reliable information and disinformation about climate change on social media, and 52% don’t think the traditional media from their country provides clear information on climate change and its causes and impacts.

Climate disinformation is the intentional spread of false or misleading information about climate change and climate action. It can take many forms, from denial and conspiracy theories to softer, more insidious arguments that seek to muddy the waters.
