Commission fines AliExpress €550 million for breaching the Digital Services Act

The European Commission has fined AliExpress €550 million for failing to protect consumers under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The e-commerce giant failed to properly assess and mitigate the risks of illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products circulating on its platform.

According to the Commission, AliExpress overestimated its automated moderation systems and lacked the human staff needed to handle the workload. Testing also revealed that the platform's recommendation algorithms actively promoted dangerous goods—including counterfeit items, unsafe toys, and hazardous cosmetics—to users before they could be removed. The Commission has officially ordered AliExpress to correct these systemic failures immediately.
