On September 28, the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Canadian Association of Journalists mark World News Day with the call 'Choose Truth. Choose Facts. Choose Journalism.' This is a global initiative aimed at drawing public attention to the role journalists play in providing credible news and information in the interest of citizens and democracy.

The date was not chosen by chance. It coincides with the UN International Day for Universal Access to Information. The idea is to emphasize that free access to facts and the truth is a fundamental human right, and professional journalists are the ones who guarantee this right. This year's campaign unites over 1,000 newsrooms and media organizations from more than 100 countries worldwide. The initiative includes both global giants like The New York Times and Reuters, as well as regional and local independent media. They all simultaneously share articles, editorials, videos, and cartoons to remind the audience of the value of verified facts.

In 2026, the core message focuses on three key challenges:

  • Mass disinformation on social media.
  • AI-generated content that can easily manipulate public opinion or distort reality through fake news websites.
  • Economic and political pressure on independent journalists around the world.
