False and Misleading Information: An Evidence Summary and Map for Policy and Practice" by Behavioural Research UK (BR-UK) finds that misinformation is a systemic, permanent threat to national security and democratic governance. The report identifies AI-generated content and algorithms as key amplifiers of harm across individual, societal, and organizational levels, recommending statutory regulation over voluntary self-regulation. False and misleading information is now recognized as a systemic national risk rather than isolated incidents, presenting a persistent threat to democracy and security. Driven by AI advancements and algorithmic amplification, the phenomenon has become an embedded feature of the modern information environment, requiring layered responses that combine individual prebunking with mandatory system-level regulation.
