Vera Jourova in Bulgaria, discussing disinformation issues

BNT interview with Jourova

European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova, responsible values and transparency, upholding the rule of law in the European Union, as well as monitoring implementation of the Code of Practice, was in Sofia, invited by Balkan Constitutional Forum. The Forum is an initiative of the Constitutional Court and is a continuation of the good cooperation with the constitutional courts of the neighbouring Balkan countries. Representatives of the constitutional courts of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Romania, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia and Turkey are participating in the Forum.

Vera Jourova also met Bulgarian Foreign Minister Maria Gabriel, where they discussed Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen area. "I thank the European Commission for the strong and consistent support expressed for Bulgaria's accession to Schengen. The message is clear and unequivocal - Bulgaria should be in Schengen", said Maria Gabriel. She stressed that the key priority of the government is to continue the justice reform.

Jourova commented a day earlier at a meeting with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov in Brussels that Bulgaria had met all the conditions for Schengen accession.

During her visit in Bulgaria, Jourova also met with representatives of civil society, media and public institutions within the framework of the initiative "Bulgarian Coalition against Disinformation", the aim of which was to fight disinformation in the European Union. The Bulgarian-Romanian Digital Media Observatory BROD, which cooperates with the European Digital Media Observatory, is also a part of the coalition.
